The Cult Headline Austin City Limits Live During SXSW

Posted:

The Cult headlined the Austin City Limits Live set at the Moody Theater late Friday night playing for a packed SXSW crowd looking to end their music-filled day with a bang, and Billy Duffy and crew did not disappoint.

While lightning raged outdoors, cancelling many SXSW showcases, the groundbreaking band entertained the indoor masses at the premier venue with songs from their recent release Hidden City, including “Dark Energy,” “Hinterland” and “Birds of Paradise.” They also mixed it up with classics “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Sweet Soul Sister,” “Lil’ Devil” and “Wildflower.”

In addition to The Cult’s epic performance, the crowd was treated to several supporting acts, including the Joe Scarborough Band, the New Regime featuring Ilan Rubin (drummer NIN, Paramore), Fantastic Negrito, and Blue October.

The Cult’s U.S. tour continues through April. Check out their tour dates here.

Billy Duffy Unveils his ‘Evil Twins’ in Guitar Player

Posted:

Cult guitarist Billy Duffy unveils his “evil twins” – his signature White and Black Falcon – in the Guitar Player magazine February 2016 issue.

After having rolled out a Gretsch signature White Falcon model in 2013, the company added a limited run of a Black Falcon in late 2015.

“It was Ian [Astbury, Cult vocalist], really, who started it all. He said, ‘You should do a black one and call it the ‘Evil Twin,’” Duffy told GP. “That’s the kind of thing Ian says, but I also thought it was a good idea.”

Duffy also talks a bit about new Cult album Hidden City, which dropped on Feb. 5.

“There are definitely more hooks in there,” said Duffy. “Everybody was happy with Choice of Weapon, but we didn’t get as deeply into song creation, because there was the double producer thing with Chris Goss starting it, and then Bob Rock finishing it. They both have their processes, so there was a bit of almost re-engineering the songs. But for this one, Bob was involved in the songwriting every early, coaching me and Ian.

“Also, one of my complaints about the last album was the guitars were the last thing to get done. You know, ‘Okay, quick. Throw a solo on there.’ Bob and I really enjoy the process because he’s a player too, so he said ‘For this one, I want to make sure you get enough time to maybe put too much guitar on the record. I’d like to take some stuff off when we mix, instead of just having enough guitar to get by.’ So we went to a studio on Maui, and we just did guitars, which was nice.”

Billy Duffy Discusses Career and Gear with Sweetwater Sound

Posted:

The Cult’s Billy Duffy recently sat down with Mitch Gallagher of Sweetwater Sound to discuss his storied career and his signature Gretsch White Falcon.

Duffy noted that he was first turned on to the White Falcon via Neil Young, while Brian Setzer’s work in the Stray Cats similarly piqued his interest in Gretsch guitars.

“I’ve always been fascinated with Gretsches as guitars,” Duffy said. “Visually, I always thought it was some mythical beast.”

And once he purchased his original Gretsch, he found that it more than delivered from a performance perspective.

“I was searching for a sound, and people have said to me, ‘Why a Gretsch, and not a Les Paul?’” he explained. “I said, ‘Well, if you think of a Gretsch as an SUV, you wouldn’t drive it down a race track. And you wouldn’t drive a sports car off-road. They do different things.’

“And the other final thing was that I could only afford one guitar, and that was the one. It just became synonymous with the band.”
