Billy Duffy Talks White Falcon With Total Guitar

Billy Duffy and his White Falcon

By Jimmy Smith

It’s no surprise to hear that Billy Duffy loves his White Falcon. Seeing the Cult guitarist with the majestic Gretsch six-string is a common sight for Duffy fanatics.  Recently, Total Guitar magazine sat down with Duffy to see how it all started.

“I always thought it was like a mythical kind of thing: this big, white semi-acoustic guitar,” said Duffy. “It was looks first.

“I really liked that Neil Young approach of getting a really aggressive sound out of a Gretsch,” he continued. “My high-school band was just slightly pre-punk. We got into stuff like Neil Young – sorta folky, rocky – and Neil Young and Crosby, Stills & Nash had them; that was the first time I saw the guitar. [Then] I joined Theater of Hate, took all my life’s savings and bought a guitar.”

Go Behind the Scenes of Guitarist‘s Center Block Photo Shoot

Posted:

For the September issue of Guitarist, there is a feature on some of the new Gretsch Center Block guitars.

As such, the music magazine held a photo shoot with model Kimberley Holladay. Photographer Philip Sowels had Holladay pose in various outfits with several of the new models, including the single- and double-cutaway Center Block Falcons.

As Guitarist put it, “In what seems to be one of those no-brainer, should-have-done- it-50-years-ago ideas, Gretsch has released a new range of guitars with a solid lump of wood through their middles, slimmed bodies and updated hardware for practicality’s sake.”

You can get the issue here to see what Guitarist thinks, and footage from the photo shoot can be seen below.

Patrick Stump Discusses His New Gretsch Signature Model

Posted:

Fall Out Boy is back and better than ever in 2013, and so is singer/guitarist Patrick Stump’s signature Gretsch guitar model, the G5135CVT-PS Stump-O-Matic Patrick Vaughn Stump Signature Electromatic® CVT, as seen (and heard) below.

In this video clip, Stump himself gives you a guided tour of the guitar, which now features a white finish with gray “competition” stripes for a cleanly elegant look with a dash of attitude. In a variety of styles, he gets a variety of sounds from its tonally versatile three-pickup design with special electronics—going from crushing full-on distortion one minute to sharply clean funk-style rhythm tone the next, and even convincingly rich acoustic-like tone, too. And watch as he “plays” the kill switch …

Chicago Music Exchange Demos a ’63 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120

Posted:

The staff at Chicago Music Exchange recently got their hands on a 1963 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 and posted a video that got up close and personal to the classic guitar.

“We were lucky enough to purchase this from a pro player who owned, played and loved (ie. took meticulous care of) this guitar for a very long time. The original orange color is one of the most vibrant we’ve seen. The neck is smooth as silk and the thing practically plays itself and the Bigsby is extremely responsive and a joy to use. The filtertrons are chimey and thick sounding and even unplugged the guitar sings loud and clear,” the vendor wrote in the guitar’s description.

While Chicago Music Exchange’s website notes that the guitar was recently sold, you can still get a great look at the Gretsch beauty in the video below.
