Ask most people about music in the 1990s, and they’ll probably point to grunge’s dominance during the early part of the decade and bubblegum pop towards the end as main mile markers.
Gretsch artists and their trusty guitars certainly had several standout moments in those areas. But whether it was the straightforward punk from Tim Armstrong and Rancid or the infectious rockabilly of Brian Setzer, Gretsch played a big part in many other genres, as well. (more…)

Tim Armstrong Revs Up Solo Project – Tim Timebomb and Friends

Last year, Tim Armstrong noted that new material from Rancid and the Transplants would be on the way, but before those records drop, fans can look forward to Armstrong’s solo project, Tim Timebomb and Friends, releasing a debut album on Dec. 11.
Armstrong has been posting tracks on his official YouTube channel over the past few weeks, offering a mix of originals and covers with several guest musicians, including Pink and Travis Barker.
“Tim Timebomb and Friends is a place for me to share with you some of my favorite songs that I’ve recorded with friends of mine,” Armstrong wrote on the Tim Timebomb website. ”I’ve always enjoyed sharing music, whether I’m just sitting around playing acoustic guitar with my friends or breaking out old 45’s.
“I guess you could call me a music nerd. I like everything from Bob Dylan to the Ramones, to Jimmy Cliff to Cock Sparrer. I plan to bring together a great group of players to record covers as well as some originals. I hope you dig it and encourage you to pass them on.” (more…)

Rancid Rocks 2012 Hootenanny

Rancid recently headlined the Hootenanny in Silverado Canyon, Calif., in celebration of their 20th anniversary, and Sullen TV caught up with drummer Branden Steineckert for an update on the band.
The clip below also includes an energetic performance of “Roots Radical,” a classic off Rancid’s 1995 album … And Out Come the Wolves.

Tim Armstrong Appears On Guitar Center Podcast

Tim Armstrong recently sat down with Guitar Center’s host Nic Harcourt for an exclusive podcast.
In the hour-long session, Armstrong opens up about his legendary punk rock career with bands such as Operation Ivy, Rancid and The Transplants, and he even performs a few acoustic gems from his prolific catalog.
In addition, Armstrong and his signature Gretsch were also featured in the March edition of the Guitar Center newsletter, which you can sign up for here.

Tim Armstrong Announces New Web Series

Rancid’s Tim Armstrong has announced a new original web series called Tim Timebomb’s RockNRoll Theater.
“Doing a show centered on musical theatre isn’t really a stretch for me,” Armstrong tells altpress.com. “For 25 years I’ve been making music and collaborating with friends, been involved in hundreds of videos, and it’s really just a direct extension of my world.”
The pilot episode, “Dante,” starring AFI frontman Davey Havok, Rancid guitarist and vocalist Lars Frederiksen and actor Robert David Hall (CSI) is scheduled to air Oct. 21 on VEVO, marking the first scripted original programming featured on the music video website.
