Tiger Army Debuts New Single “I Am the Moth”

Nick 13 and psychobilly punk rockers Tiger Army are pushing genre boundaries with their new album V •••–, drawing from a range of influences that include Buddy Holly, the Ramones and a little bit of everything in between. Their first single “I Am the Moth” captures the many sounds the band has experimented with and sets the tone for what fans can expect on the new effort.

It’s easy to hear the trio’s retro rock inspirations from the first few chords. The main guitar riff is reminiscent of a Western movie, while the dramatic chorus features a theremin that cuts through the song like a haunting ‘60s horror flick. Nick 13’s breathy voice adds the modern touch to update the classic sounding single.

Nick 13 recently told Consequence of Sound that the song represents his “lifelong love of the night, the idea that perhaps some of us are predisposed to this biologically.” He added, “It also has to do with co-option of imagery and attitudes by people who claim to represent a lifestyle that they don’t live.”

V •••– will be available for download on May 20.

Nick 13 Drops Debut Music Video

Nick 13 unveiled the first music video off his eponymous debut solo album this week.

Released on Sugar Hill Records, Nick 13 is a solid Americana effort with tales of roadtrips and heartbreak.

In “All Alone,” Nick 13 sings from a vintage TV in a house full of knick-knacks, adding to that Americana spirit.

Nick 13′s Debut Album Out Now

Nick 13, founder of the band Tiger Army, released his self-titled debut album for Sugar Hill Records this summer.

The offering is billed as pure Americana/country that fans would recognize in Tiger Army songs like “Outlaw Heart.”  But in a recent interview with Alternative Press, Nick 13 said there is also a different feel on his solo effort.

“The first person to give me the idea of a primary songwriter making a solo record was Paul Fenech of the Meteors,” he said.  ”I always thought there was something cool about that: You write all the songs for the band, and there’s a certain sound people expect. But while Tiger Army has always tested those kinds of boundaries, there are certain things that relate to heaviness and aggression that aren’t part of my solo project, at all. I wouldn’t want a Tiger Army fan to pick up this record and expect what [he or she is] accustomed to.”

Co-produced by Greg Leisz (Wilco, Lucinda Williams) and James Intveld and mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Wilco), it features contributions from players like Nashville legend Lloyd Green, Josh Grange (Dwight Yoakam, k.d. lang, Dixie Chicks), Mitch Marine (Dwight Yoakam), Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Eddie Perez (Dwight Yoakam, The Mavericks).

Nick 13 has spent much of the year touring in support of the album, such as this performance from last summer:
