Electromatic lap steel

I recently purchased a used lap steel a Gretsch. The pick-up is kind of weak and tinny and I was wondering if anyone knew of a fix for this or, as an alternative, if anyone could tell me what a good replacement pick-up would be for this guitar.

It's often the case that these pickups are situated too far from the strings. Try cutting a piece or two of mouse pad and placing it underneath the pickup to raise it.
