Gretsch electric guitar set up question (string gauge)

Postby tamirrr » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:22 am

hey there,
I'm trying to start a hobby / part time work by setting up and fixing guitars.
I get a Gretsch electric hollow body guitar from a friend and I want to try and clean it up, set it up and give it back to him. I know how to do everything but the only thing I'm a bit unsure about is what to do if I increase the string gauge. I'm pretty sure it's now with 0.10 but he said he wanted 0.11 and I'm not sure how to compensate for this change in string gauge.
For example, on a floyd rose, you need to adjust the bridge's tension with the screws inside the guitar to compensate for the heavier load. Is there anything similar on a Gretsch? Am I supposed to just change to the new set of 0.11 and it will just work?
I did some reading on the web but couldn't find an accurate answer.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Tamir

HI,
You will have to check the nut, making sure the larger strings don't stick, and are seated properly. You will also need to check the neck relief, and possibly make an adjustment. and lastly, check and adjust intonation.

Bottom line is.. a complete setup...

Good Luck and have fun

Thanks Bill :)
I'll give that a go. I think I should be fine.
I was just a bit worried that I was missing something like with the floyd rose bridge going out of balance for example...
Cheers,

Hi Tamir
Slick here, If you go to Gretschtalk.com and join, it's free. Look up (worknot) and he will help you out. I have been told you can put 9's, 10's, 11's, and 12's on this guitar 5120 and nut have to do to much adjusting to it. Check it out Gretschtalk.com

I am new to this as well, but that answered my question about changing the strings. I thought that every time that I was changing the strings on the g5120 that there was some kind of adjustment.....great advise..

In my experience, going up or down one string guage (i.e. from .010 down to .009 or from .010 up to .011) shouldn't have an adverse effect. The only adjustment needed should be intonation.
